With The Boys

Image 1: To begin the Journey we see a striking resemblance between sleeves in 'With The Boy'. The pictures are both black-and-white with the light coming in from the left side creating a shadow towards the right. Peter Rowan's hair in Boy is of the same complexion than The Beatles, and his expression transmits a feeling of innocence akin to the one The Bealtes emanate. It is very interesting to note that both sleeve designers, Robert Freeman for The Beatles, and Steve Averill for U2, argued for not showing “the band name” or “album title” in the cover. For With The Beatles the idea didn’t go through because EMI considered it too radical. In U2’s case it did. Even though the name of the band does appear in the boy’s hair, it is almost invisible for the naked eye.

Image 2: In the 2021 Black Friday Record Store Day, U2 released a limited edition Gloria single in Vinyl. The album cover shows how deeply The Beatles influenced U2's art in those early days. (See Below)
